The islands were first spotted by the Portuguese Admiral Vasco da Gama, who passed through the Amirantes and named them after himself.
1609
The first recorded landing by a British East India Company ship "Ascension".
1742
The first French exploratory expedition led by Captain Lazare Picault.
1756
The French take control of the islands; a Stone of Possession was laid by Captain Nicholas Morphey.
1794
Chevalier Jean Baptise Queau de Quinssy becomes Governor of the Seychelles.
1814
The Treaty of Paris; Seychelles became a British dependency.
1835
England abolishes slavery on the islands
1903
The Seychelles break away from the Mauritius colony and became a crown colony administered from London.
1976
The Seychelles became an Independent republic. James Mancham became the first president of the Republic of Seychelles.
1977
France Albert René seizes power.
1993
Albert René won the first multiparty presidential and legislative elections.
2004
René is transferring the presidency to James Alix Michel.
2006
James Alix Michel wins the presidential election.
